The Internet: great things coming
from bad situations. “The Internet got its start in the United States more than
50 years ago as a government weapon in the Cold War. For years, scientists and
researchers used it to communicate and share data with one another.” (History.com,
2012). Obviously, this little invention
snowballed into the Goliath we see today. What can one not find on the
internet? Need a recipe? Need help with homework? Want to find directions to
Mt. Everest, or even see Mt. Everest? How about building a bomb? Some things
are very cool; one can question however if some things should be so easily
accessible. The fact is that the internet, in less than a quarter of a century,
has become THE communications tool of the planet. Not since the first printing
of the Gutenberg bible has there been such a revolution in mass communication. And
just like Gutenberg’s printed words started to equalize the economic classes of
its time, the internet has brought power to a great number of people. “It's been two years since the Nasdaq topped 5,000 and dot-com millionaires
were the undisputed heroes of the New Economy. . . e-millionaires — those who
made $1 million or more through their direct involvement in the Internet (that
is, not simply as an investor) — are still very much alive, well, wealthy and
interested in high-end products and services.” (Herman, 2008).
The
internet, however, has superseded individual use by far. There is no country on
earth which could stay economically relevant without the internet. Banking,
commerce, security, all are fields where the need to internet access is absolute.
It certainly makes one think of the world of the “Terminator,” where machines took over and started to obsolete
humanity. We should never forget that the internet is a tool – nothing less,
but also nothing more.
